Day 1 2015: A Good Man is Hard to Find

My husband and I just celebrated our 49th wedding anniversary. Breathe In.  Hold It.  Exhale.  Wow! I sometimes think that is a L.O.N.G. time.  Other times it seems like it was just yesterday that two youngsters joined hands and said “I Do”.  We have stuck together and weathered many storms-deaths, a job that was making us INSANE, sickness, divorces of parents and so on.  We have had times we did not agree.  But we also had lots of times that we did agree.

My husband is not a big gift giver, flower buyer, candy purchaser.  I frankly cannot remember a single time he has bought me a box of candy over the 49 years. He figures I will buy it myself if I want it. I know he will never surprise me by making my breakfast. He would take me out to breakfast though. Sometimes I think that I did not do a good job “training” him.  But sometimes he can really surprise me.

We had fallen into the habit of going “away” for the weekend for our anniversary every year. Generally we were unable to do something on the actual day because frankly, my job did not allow for it. Lots of times we drove down to the Georgia coast but sometimes we went elsewhere. Our 40th anniversary was close approaching and I had been so busy at work and worked such long hours that we just had not talked about doing anything. When I left work that day, I remember saying to my secretary that I didn’t know what the weekend held and we would probably just hang out at home.  Boy! Was I wrong.

The next morning, Mike was up early and got me up and we went to breakfast which was nice. He told me he had a surprise for me and dropped me off to have a massage. Nice! Really nice! Then he picked me up and I had a haircut and that was great. When he picked me up this time, he was dressed differently. He told me we were going to lunch. We went to a neat little place close to where I worked. The restaurant had this old 1940’s van that they periodically painted with messages. The community loved to see a birthday greeting with their name on it. When we got there, it had a message from my husband-“It’s been 40, would you do it again?” What a sweetie. Then he gave me an invitation to open. It was an invitation to a 40th wedding vow renewal in the sweetest little church down from my school. When we got there, tons of people were there. He had a wedding gown for me and yes! it fit! Our children were there, our grandchildren and friends and co-workers. I was so touched! I could not believe he had arranged all this and no one had leaked a single clue about it. We had a reception with a wedding cake and tons of food. We had the best time!

But he was not done yet. We left the next morning and flew to Arizona and spent five days at the Grand Canyon. It was fabulous! It’s been over 9 years since he gave me the surprise of my life. I cannot count the times I have remembered how special he made our anniversary that year. So I will just make my own cup of coffee or buy my own chocolate because this man that I love dearly really knows how to make our anniversary special.
